Chapter 8

Ivy talked me into going over to her house. I was a bit hesitant at first, since I had been avoiding her for about two weeks. But it didn’t matter. She welcomed me with open arms. Tears threatened to spill over. We sat down and she offered me some tea. We had a nice long talk about everything that had been going on.

In a dark restaurant across town, two men sat at a table in a far corner. Their voices were low and their eyes constantly scanning the room for eavesdroppers. No one paid them a bit of attention. The paranoia on their faces would have been obvious to anyone who cared.

The pudgy man leaned in with a whisper. “Your daughter is causing a lot of trouble for me, you know.” He munched on bread and butter while waiting for the waitress to return.

“Yeah, I know,” Stan replied, eyeing the couple at the next table. “I just don’t know what to do about it. She’s got it in her head that she can solve her kidnapping, and wants everyone to know about it. I’m at a loss as to what my next move should be.”

“Your next move should be to tell her to stop. I mean immediately stop. Make yourself crystal clear. Otherwise she's going to get herself killed." The man was holding nothing back.

Stan sat back in his chair almost out of breath. “How can you say that about Georgie? She’s my daughter and I love her. You wouldn’t really hurt her, would you?” His eyes were bulging, with an almost inability to blink. What the man had just said to Stan absolutely terrified him.

“No, no. Of course not,” the man said to Stan, waving his hand about dismissively. I would never hurt her. But there are others…” He raised his eyebrows at Stan. It was all he needed to say.

Stan shot to his feet, knocking is chair over behind him. It clanked loudly on the hard tile floor. Stan barely noticed. “I can’t sit here and listened to this.” His voice was loud. Almost hysterical. He glanced around the room. Quite a few pairs of eyeballs were pointed firmly in his direction.

The pudgy man patted the air in front of him. “Stan, Stan. Sit down. You are causing a scene,” he said just loud enough for Stan to hear him.

Stan obeyed, picking his chair up and placing it back at the table gently. He sat. When he looked around again, most of the restaurant customers had returned to their own conversations and meals. When Stan’s gaze met the couple of hangers on, they immediately turned away, having been caught staring.

“Stan, you worry me,” the pudgy man said. “Getting hysterical isn’t going to help anything.”

“I’m hardly hysterical,” Stan replied, a gruffness to his voice. “But you are threatening my daughter. I love her and won’t stand for that.”

“I didn’t threaten her, Stan. I just informed you of what could possibly happen.”

“I’m not an idiot,” Stan replied. “I know a threat when I hear one.
